Many people left Germany, especially from the Palatine area, in the early to mid-1700's. Johan Michael Braun was one. He was born Jan 15, 1724 and according to Rupp's "Thirty Thousand Immigrants", he arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Sept. 26, 1737. He had sailed on the ship, "Saint Andrew Galley", John Stedham, Master.
He settled in East Hanover, Lebanon Twp, Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania. (Later Dauphin Co, and now Lebanon Co.) He met Anna Margaret Karger who lived in the town of Warwick, also in Lancaster Co. They were married on Jan 26, 1746 in the Hill Evangelical Lutheran Church by Reverand John Casper Stoever.
Michael and Anna farmed in East Hanover. They had a mill on their property that was erected at Sahara Creek and Michael was a blacksmith.
Michael died in Lebanon Twp, Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania and he was buried in Bindnagle's Church Cemetary north of Palmyra with the following inscription on his tombstone: Michael Brown

My primary focus now is to find Michael Brown's German origin. I think he was brought to America by his mother, Maria Katarina Braun. Her name is found a few times on the Emmanual Lutheran Church records in Brickerville as a baptismal sponsor. It was common to name the oldest daughter after the maternal grandmother, and this is the same name as Michael's oldest daughter. According to a biographical sketch done around 1880 in the Bickel family it was stated that the family came from near Worms, Germany and on the banks of the Rhine. We had always assumed that it was the Bickels that came from there, but we have recently discovered that the Bickels came from Massenbach, which is maybe about 40 miles from Worms, so it must have been the Browns.

We know from Michael's tombstone at Bindnagles Church near Palmyra, Pennsylvania that he was born on Jan. 6, 1723 This means that if he was the passenger on the St. Andrew Galley in 1737, that he was only 13-14 years old. The passenger list from that voyage was taken from the oath of allegiance signatures that were actually obtained in Rotterdam. Only males over the age of 16 were allowed to sign. It is therefore unlikely that the listed passenger was actually our Michael. I would put forth the theory that it was probably actually his father, who must have subsequently died without generating any other records in America. Naming patterns of German immigrants usually named the first born son after the maternal grandfather. In Michael and Anna's case this probably means that Anna's father's name was Christopher. The second born son was usually named after the paternal grandfather, and in this case that would be Michael. So Michael's father's name was probably also Michael, since Michael Jr. was the second born son.

There is a gap of about four years between the arrival of the St. Andrew Galley and the first record of their life in Pennsylvania, which showed up in the records of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Brickerville. There is an unmarried woman named Catarina Braunin in the congregation in 1741. I surmise that this is probably Michael's mother, probably a widow, who appears as a baptismal sponsor. Michael's sister was also named Catarina, but would probably have been too young to be a baptismal sponsor at that time.
