Note:  In 1823, John bought land in what would become Hamilton Twp in southern Jackson Co., Ohio.  John was of the co-founders of it in 1825.  There were 3 trustees and they were Samuel Gillilland, John Canter, and John Cantwell.  The treasurer was John Walls, a relative of John's wife, Barbara Walls.     Thomas Canter, John's father, died when John was 2 and his mother, Penelope, died when he was only about 7 years old.  Now an orphan, he went to live with George Walls, who became his guardian.  He ultimately married George Walls' daughter, Barbara.
